Full Car Inspection Checklist Before Buying a Used Car in India

Why You Need a Pre-Purchase Inspection
In India's used car market, vehicles with flood damage, accident history, odometer tampering, or major hidden repairs are commonly misrepresented. A proper independent inspection can save you from paying for someone else's problem. Never rely solely on the seller's word or a quick visual check.
Documents to Verify First
- RC (Registration Certificate) — verify owner name, engine, chassis number
- Insurance with no major claim history (ask for NCB certificate)
- PUC (Pollution Under Control) certificate validity
- Loan NOC if car was financed
- Service history book — check stamps, look for gaps in service records
- VAHAN portal check for blacklisting, challan, hypothecation
Exterior Inspection (15 Points)
- Panel gaps: Uneven gaps between doors, hood, fenders indicate accident repair or poor reassembly
- Paint match: Shine a torch at different angles to spot repainted panels (colour/texture differences)
- Body filler: Use a magnet — it won't stick to bondo (body filler used after accident repair)
- Rust: Check wheel arches, door bottoms, under sills, and under the boot carpet
- Windshield cracks or chips — replacement is ₹8,000–₹25,000
- Tyre tread depth and age (check manufacture date on sidewall — 4-digit code)
- Wheel condition: Cracks, dents, or scrape marks indicate pothole abuse
- All lights working — headlights, indicators, brake lights, reverse lights
Under the Hood
- Engine oil: Check colour (black = overdue change), check for white foam (coolant in oil = head gasket issue)
- Coolant level and condition — should be green/blue, not rusty or milky
- Battery condition — check for swelling, corrosion on terminals
- Belt condition — no cracking, fraying on timing belt or serpentine belt
- Oil leaks — look under the engine for oil patches on the ground
- Chassis numbers visible and unmodified
Test Drive Checklist
- Cold start — any smoke? (white = coolant burning, blue = oil burning)
- Engine revs smoothly without hesitation or misfires
- Brakes: no pulling, grinding, or pulsation
- Steering: no vibration, no play, no pulling to one side
- Transmission: gear changes smoothly, no slipping (auto) or grinding (manual)
- AC cooling time — should reach cold air within 2–3 minutes
- No unusual noises from engine, suspension, wheel bearings
