Radar Calibration After Accident Repair: Why It Matters

MechOnGo Team27 September 2026 5 min read

If your car has a front radar sensor, repairs to the bumper, grille or front structure often mean the radar needs to be realigned (calibrated) afterwards. The radar measures the distance and speed of vehicles ahead for adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking. Even a small change in its angle can affect where it thinks other vehicles are.

Where Radar Sensors Are Fitted

A front radar is usually mounted behind the bumper, grille or manufacturer's badge. Some cars also have corner radars at the front or rear for blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alerts. The radar is aimed through the bumper cover or badge, which is why those parts matter too.

Why Accident Repair Affects the Radar

  • Bracket damage: a light impact can bend the radar bracket without any visible damage to the sensor.
  • Removal and refitting: taking the bumper off and refitting it can change the radar's angle.
  • Replacement parts: a new bumper, grille, badge or bracket must match the specification. Wrong or repainted covers can affect the radar signal.
  • Paint and repairs: manufacturers often restrict paint thickness, filler and repairs in the area directly in front of the radar.

Why Wheel Alignment Matters

Radar calibration references the car's direction of travel, known as the thrust line. If the wheel alignment is off, for example after an accident damaged suspension parts, the radar can be aligned to the wrong reference. Many procedures require a correct wheel alignment before radar calibration.

How Radar Is Calibrated

  • Static calibration: a reflector target is positioned at a measured distance and angle in front of the car, and the radar's aim is adjusted or recorded. Some radars are adjusted mechanically with screws; others record the offset electronically.
  • Dynamic calibration: the car is driven under specified conditions while the radar calibrates against its surroundings.

The manufacturer's procedure decides which method is used. See ADAS calibration explained.

Signs the Radar Needs Attention

  • "Adaptive cruise unavailable" or "radar blocked or restricted" messages after repair
  • Collision warnings at the wrong time, or not at all
  • Adaptive cruise reacting to vehicles in the next lane
  • Fault codes for sensor misalignment in the radar or ADAS module

A radar can also report "blocked" because of dirt, snow or mud on the bumper. That should be ruled out first.

Is Radar Calibration Available for My Car?

Whether a procedure is available depends on the vehicle manufacturer, model, model year, the specific module, and any security or online requirements the manufacturer applies. We confirm the procedure, including any alignment or parts requirements, before booking. See our radar and camera calibration service.

Repair Considerations Around the Radar

  • Brackets: use the specified bracket, and replace it if it is bent. Brackets are not meant to be straightened.
  • Bumper covers and badges: the area in front of the radar must meet the manufacturer's specification. Some badges are made specifically to let radar signals through.
  • Paint and filler: many manufacturers limit paint thickness and forbid filler in front of the radar, because they can weaken or deflect the signal.
  • Connectors and wiring: check them for damage after a front-end impact.

What Happens During Radar Calibration

  1. The radar and its mounting are inspected, and fault codes are read.
  2. Wheel alignment is checked or set, where the procedure requires it.
  3. For static calibration, a reflector target is positioned at the specified distance, height and angle from the car's reference points.
  4. The radar is adjusted or its offset recorded with the diagnostic tool; for dynamic calibration, the specified drive is completed.
  5. Faults are cleared and the radar-based functions are verified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a minor bumper knock misalign the radar?

Yes. The bracket can bend without visible damage to the sensor or bumper. If driver-assistance behaviour changes after a knock, have it checked.

Does the radar need replacing after an accident?

Not necessarily. If the sensor works and its bracket and mounting are sound, calibration may be enough. A damaged sensor or bracket needs replacing first.

Why do I need a wheel alignment before radar calibration?

The radar is aligned to the car's direction of travel. If the alignment is off, the radar may be calibrated to the wrong reference.

Can adaptive cruise work without radar calibration?

It may switch itself off, or it may not behave as designed. Where the manufacturer specifies calibration after a repair, it should be done before relying on the system.
