Tyre Rotation, Balancing & Wheel Alignment: What's the Difference and When Do You Need Each?
Three Different Services — Three Different Problems
Many car owners confuse tyre rotation, balancing, and alignment — or use the terms interchangeably. They're three completely separate services that address different issues.
Tyre Rotation
What it is: Moving tyres from one position to another (e.g., front-left to rear-left) to ensure even wear across all four tyres.
Why it matters: Front tyres (especially on front-wheel-drive cars) carry more load and do more steering work — they wear faster. Rotating evenly extends overall tyre life by 15,000–20,000 km.
When to do it: Every 5,000–10,000 km or every oil change.
Signs you need it: Uneven tread depth across tyres, inner or outer edges wearing faster than the centre.
Cost in Delhi NCR: ₹200–₹500 (often free with other services at MechOnGo).
Wheel Balancing
What it is: Adding small weights to the wheel rim to compensate for weight imbalances in the tyre-wheel assembly.
Why it matters: Even a 5-gram imbalance causes vibration at highway speeds. Unbalanced wheels cause steering wheel shimmy, uneven tyre wear, and fatigue on suspension components.
When to do it: Every 5,000–10,000 km, after any tyre repair, or when you feel vibration above 60 km/h.
Signs you need it: Steering wheel vibrates at specific speeds (usually 60–100 km/h), humming or thudding noise from wheels.
Cost in Delhi NCR: ₹100–₹150 per tyre (₹400–₹600 for all four).
Wheel Alignment
What it is: Adjusting the angles of the wheels so they're perfectly perpendicular to the ground and parallel to each other, per the manufacturer's specification.
Why it matters: Misaligned wheels cause the car to pull to one side, cause rapid and uneven tyre wear (costing you tyres much earlier), and reduce fuel efficiency.
When to do it: Every 10,000–15,000 km, after hitting a pothole hard, after suspension/steering work, or whenever you notice the car pulling.
Signs you need it: Car drifts to one side on a straight road, steering wheel is off-centre when driving straight, rapid or uneven tyre wear, crooked steering wheel.
Cost in Delhi NCR: ₹500–₹1,000 for 4-wheel computerised alignment.
Can You Do Just One?
Yes — these are independent services. However, new tyres should always get a fresh balance and alignment before leaving the fitment shop. After any suspension repair, always re-align. After pothole damage, check both balance and alignment.
