DSG Adaptation Explained: Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi Dual-Clutch Gearboxes
DSG adaptation, often called a "basic setting", is a procedure that makes a Volkswagen-group dual-clutch gearbox re-learn its clutch and gear-actuator positions. It is typically needed after a clutch replacement, mechatronic or TCM work, or other gearbox repairs. It restores smooth engagement when learned values no longer match the parts. It won't fix a mechanical or hydraulic fault.
What a DSG Is
DSG is Volkswagen's name for its dual-clutch transmission, used across Volkswagen, Skoda and Audi models. It uses two clutches, one for odd gears and one for even, so the next gear can be pre-selected and shifts happen quickly. Depending on the model, the clutches may be dry or wet (running in oil). A mechatronic unit combines the gearbox's control module with the hydraulic or electric actuators that operate the clutches and shift forks.
What Adaptation Does
The mechatronic unit learns exact positions and values: where each clutch starts to bite, the positions of the gear actuators, and pressure values. These change as clutches wear and differ from gearbox to gearbox. A basic setting clears the stored values and runs a routine so the gearbox learns them again. Some procedures are done stationary; some also need a specific road drive.

- After replacing the clutch pack
- After mechatronic unit or TCM repair or replacement, together with any programming and coding it needs
- After other gearbox repairs where the procedure specifies it
- After some fluid services on wet-clutch gearboxes, depending on the model

What It Can't Fix
Adaptation won't repair worn or damaged clutches, hydraulic or mechatronic faults, a mechanical gearbox fault, or incorrect or low fluid. It can temporarily mask symptoms. So a gearbox that needs adaptation repeatedly, or doesn't improve, needs proper diagnosis: fault codes, live clutch data, and fluid checks where applicable. Availability
Procedures differ between DSG types and model years. Some require the manufacturer's systems for programming a replacement mechatronic unit. Availability depends on the specific vehicle, model year, gearbox and procedure. See the Volkswagen and Audi service pages.
How DSG Problems Are Diagnosed
- Read gearbox fault codes and scan related modules.
- Review live data, such as clutch temperatures, clutch slip and actuator positions, where the equipment supports it.
- Check fluid level and condition where applicable, to the manufacturer's procedure.
- Road-test to reproduce the symptom.
- Decide whether the fault needs adaptation, a software update, or mechanical or mechatronic repair.
Driving Habits and Dual-Clutch Gearboxes
Owner's manuals for dual-clutch gearboxes often advise using the brake or hill-hold rather than the accelerator to hold the car on a slope, and avoiding prolonged creeping in stop-go traffic where possible. Holding the car on the clutch creates heat and wear, particularly on dry-clutch versions. Follow the guidance in your car's own manual.
